I remember when I was in my undergrad. I used to go the Math/Physics Tutoring lab to understand some problems. However, I never asked the tutors to do my homework or anything that I knew I had to do myself. The art of problem solving is an skill based on experience and knowledge. However, sometimes, you need to take lots of time to solve a problem. That’s ok, that’s part of the process. At the same time, I do believe in the value of looking at an answer or a piece of code. Sometimes that allows one to better understand. But nothing can replace the challenge in problem solving.
I have had different experiences with tutoring. In general, at times it can be extremely difficult when the student is not mature enough for a university class, not willing to make an effort and most importantly, lacking the skills required by a specific major. An example I always like to give, is my guitar playing. While, I did play guitar when I was much younger and even had a few bands, it was extremely difficult. I was never able to listen to a song and play it in my guitar… I would get the idea but not the correct notes. I had trouble (I still do) tuning the guitar by ear. I had trouble following some tempos (maybe all of them.) but I knew the more I practice, the better I would get. But in reality, I did not have the skills.
While I’m no one to say who has CS skills or who doesn’t have them, I think it is important for oneself to asses the problem. Sometimes we have many students in college because they may not have an alternative. And it is true, there is not much of an alternative in here.
The major problem I have notice with tutoring is that when you are paid by a third party (e.g., School) there is the tendency to be able to help in the right way without having to give away the homework. When tutors get paid directly, specially in areas like Computer Science and Engineering, it becomes extremely difficult not to do most if not all the work for students.
I think that if you need lots of tutoring for your degree, this should be a symptom that must be analyzed. I’m not saying that is bad to take one semester’s help with tutoring.
It is difficult to balance tutoring.
